The Development of Skills in Family Medicine Residents to Diagnose and Prevent Leprosy

Abstract

Introduction: The development of skills to diagnose and prevent leprosy in family medicine residents is an aspect of singular importance within the specialization of clinical sciences, in view of providing quality comprehensive medical care to different health problems, specifically to the diagnosis and prevention of leprosy.

Objective: To provide a theoretical basis for the development of leprosy diagnosis and prevention skills in family medicine residents, with an emphasis on the modes of professional performance.

Methods: A bibliographic review was carried out from January to March 2023. The search engines used were Google Scholar, MEDLINE and SciELO; the keywords used were lepra [leprosy], habilidad/diagnosticar [skill/diagnose] and prevención [prevention]. The articles reviewed were generally less than 10 years old and referred to the topic of study through their titles. Of the 65 retrieved articles, 31 were selected for research.

Conclusions: The preventive and educational challenge of the population concerning leprosy is transforming and reducing the social stigma that the disease causes; making an early diagnosis and treating patients adequately with strict follow-up of their evolution prevent disabilities. The basic health team plays a leading role, which derives in the need to train, develop and improve the skills to diagnose and prevent leprosy in family medicine residents, with an emphasis on the modes of professional performance.
