Abstract

Introduction: A newborn with low birth weight is a baby weighing less than 2500 g, regardless of gestational age and whatever the cause. It is one of the healthcare problems that health professionals have to face and one of the most important indexes to determine the chances of the newborn to survive with normal growth and development.

Objective: To provide a theoretical and updated compilation of pieces of research related to low birth weight, taking into account its risk factors, prevention and complications in times of pandemic.

Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted between May and June 2021, with a critical analysis of documents. SciELO, Google Scholar and Google databases were used, by means of accepting the Spanish descriptors for "Low birth weight,” "Pregnancy,” "Risk factors,” "Prevention,” "Complications" and "COVID-19,” as well as the Boolean operators AND and OR.

Conclusions: Low birth weight is of multifactorial cause, in which the biological and social converge. It is necessary to continue research about the effects of COVID-19 on pregnant women and the weight of newborns.
