Abstract

Introduction: The growth in the population of older adults has triggered the need of personnel to care for them.

Objective: To modify knowledge in caregivers of dependent older adults.

Methods: An educational intervention was carried out, in the period from December 2017 to September 2018, with the 25 caregivers of dependent older adults belonging to the family medical office # 4 of Ramón López Peña Polyclinic of Santiago de Cuba. The educational strategy was carried out in three stages: diagnosis, development and assessment. To obtain information, a questionnaire was applied to the participants. Variables such as age, sex and level of knowledge were studied.

Results: It was evidenced that, before the intervention, most of the patients had inadequate knowledge in the domains of feeding, bathing and hygiene, mobility and movement, caregiver-elderly helping relationship, and self-care of their health, results that were modified after the intervention.

Conclusions: A significant improvement was achieved regarding the knowledge indicators assessed.
