Sacha inchi Oil and Its Use in the Treatment of Certain Diseases

Introduction: The oil extracted from the seeds of Plukenetia volubilis, or Sacha inchi, has high content of proteins, fats, and secondary metabolites with diverse properties.
Objective: To describe the effects of using Sacha inchi oil in the management of certain diseases.
Methods: A literature review was conducted using Google Scholar, SciELO, and PubMed databases. The keywords used were Sacha inchi; Plukenetia volubilis; beneficial effects; side effects; and cardiovascular risk, using AND, OR, and NOT as Boolean operators in different combinations. The review included review papers, research papers, and websites that were generally published less than 10 years ago, in Spanish and English, and that referenced the topic of study in the title. The criteria for selection were those that examined the effects of using Sacha inchi oil in the management of certain diseases. The most important and appropriate articles were selected according to the author's criteria. Articles that did not meet these criteria were excluded, resulting in 97 articles, 64 of them were referenced.
Conclusions: Sacha inchi oil is a product that promotes antioxidant, hypolipidemic, immunomodulatory, anticancer, antibacterial, and emollient activity. It can be used as adjuvant in the prevention and/or treatment of protein-calorie malnutrition, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, cancer, arthritis, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of the treatment of some inflammatory disorders of the skin (acne) and joints (arthritis).
