Abstract

Introduction: Spirulina or Spirulina platensis is a blue-green seaweed, belonging to the Arthrospira family, it has been indicated that it has a high quality nutritional composition thanks to its protein content (65%), carbohydrates (15% ), lipids (6%), vitamins (0.74%), minerals (8%), carotenoids (3.46%) and other pigments (1.79%), giving it antioxidant properties, which are necessary to neutralize the oxidant imbalance in the body caused by free radicals, which are generated through endogenous and exogenous stressors, which is why diet therapy that includes these components can reduce and/or prevent the health effects of oxidative stress.

Objective: To collect information about the effect of consuming spirulina algae on biomarkers of oxidative stress.

Methods: A bibliographic search was carried out in electronic databases Medline (PubMed), Science Direct and digital library from UAEH.

Conclusions: Spirulina algae exerts a decrease in oxidative stress biomarkers; however, it is necessary to continue researching the recommended dose and time for this compound.
