Abstract

Introduction: Psychomotor development is a complex process, expressed by continuity and changes in motor, cognitive, psychosocial and language-related skills.

Objective: To describe the families’ perceptions about the monitoring of the psychomotor development of their four- and five-year-old children.

Methods: A qualitative, phenomenological research was carried out in a family doctor and nurse's office of Policlínico 13 de Marzo, Habana del Este, Havana, from November 2019 to February 2022. The theoretical reference was the knowledge translation model. The guidelines described in the Manual for the evaluation of psychomotor development in children under 6 years of age were used. Four families with children aged between four and five years participated.

Results: The families expressed that the child’s the arrival meant joy, love, motivation and challenge to them. They also commented on the need for different materials to help monitor psychomotor development. Of the 6 analyzed guidelines, it was necessary to translate 3 into popular language.

Conclusions: The arrival of a child represents the materialization of the main reason for existence. In some guidelines, the families proposed a more understandable language. Printed paper documents are, for families, the most requested form of tools to be used for guiding them in monitoring the psychomotor development of their children.
