Abstract

Introduction: The SARS-CoV-2 virus is transmissible between humans and has caused a pandemic.

Objective: To describe some clinical and epidemiological characteristics of patients with COVID-19 at pediatric age.

Methods: A descriptive study was performed, between April 2020 and June 2021, with children confirmed for SARS-CoV-2, using real-time polymerase chain reaction test. The variables described were age, sex, comorbidities, source of infection, symptoms and evolution.

Results: The highest number of diagnosed cases occurred in February 2021, with 174 cases (39.2%). Autochthonous transmission accounted for 100% of the cases. The female sex (51.6 %) and the age group between 10-18 years (63.5 %) predominated. 61.6 % of patients remained asymptomatic; the most frequent symptoms were cough and fever (29.2 % and 22.2 %, respectively). 100 % of the admitted patients were reported for care and were discharged alive from the institution.

Conclusions: Transmission was autochthonous among female adolescents and schoolchildren, mostly asymptomatic. Respiratory manifestations were the main symptoms. Most of the patients were diagnosed in the first 24 hours, reported for care and discharged alive.
