Abstract

Introduction: Active screening is a health technology that could help identify COVID-19 cases.

Objective: To describe a methodological proposal for expanded and personalized screening of COVID-19 in Venezuela, as well as the results of its implementation.

Methods: Descriptive and cross-sectional study carried out between March and May 2020. The universe included the 27 379 367 people contacted through the epidemiological survey of Plataforma Patria on SARS-CoV-2 or through the scanning technique, and the 478 954 screening participants. The discussion group technique was used in the design of the methodological proposal. Quantitative and qualitative variables were included for the analysis of the implementation. Participant observation, individual interview and triangulation were used for qualitative assessment. Descriptive statistic was used.

Results: The methodological proposal was conceived as interrelated actions organized in stages, according to the sequence of their execution. 99.2% of the people were visited using the scanning technique. 0.2% of the people presented clinical or epidemiological manifestations of COVID-19, while those contacted through the Patria Platform accounted for the highest percentage (11.3%). A rapid test was performed on 1,309 (2.6%) people; 433 (33.1%) were positive and 1,927 (3.9%) were hospitalized. The latter ones had a variable behavior, with a daily average of 37.

Conclusions: The methodological proposal designed shows its feasibility to detect people with clinical or epidemiological manifestations of COVID-19.
