Abstract

Introduction: During outbreaks of respiratory infections, pregnant women are a group with increased risk of complications. Data on the clinical characteristics of COVID-19 in pregnant women are limited.

Objective: To describe the clinical-epidemiological characteristics of pregnant women who became infected with COVID-19 in Cuba between March 11 and June 11, 2020, as well as the response to the pharmacological treatments used and the products of pregnancies.

Methods: An observational and descriptive study of case series was carried out, which included pregnant women affected by COVID-19 identified during the investigation on Factores de riesgo genético asociados a la severidad clínica de la COVID-19 en pacientes cubanos [Genetic risk factors associated with clinical severity of COVID-19 in Cuban patients], developed by the National Center for Medical Genetics, who answered the research questionnaire and whose evolution was monitored.

Results: Seven pregnant women were included, of which six presented mild or moderate symptoms and one remained asymptomatic. The most frequent clinical manifestations were cough, fatigue and nasal obstruction. The most frequent comorbidity was bronchial asthma. At the time of diagnosis, three of the pregnant women were in the first trimester of pregnancy and four, in the second. The studied pregnancies continued their evolution without obstetric complications or alterations in fetal well-being, with normal tests in the genetic follow-up.

Conclusions: In the cases studied, the SARS-CoV-2 infection during the first and second trimesters of pregnancy, as well as the treatment used, did not produce severe effects on maternal health, pregnancy or the fetus.
