Obesity and COVID-19: impact on risk and severity

Abstract

Introduction: Obesity has been considered as a risk factor for the presentation of symptoms and severity of COVID-19.

Objective: To describe the impact of obesity, on the condition of risk and severity, in patients with active COVID-19 disease.

Methods: A systematic review of studies published on the subject of Obesity, severity, risk and mortality from COVID-19 was carried out. Scientific search engines were used: PubMed, Cochrane, Science direct, Medline.

Results: 1084 studies were identified which were analyzed and completed using the COVIDENCE® platform. In the final analysis, 13 articles were included, with a total of 28 413 patients, considering admission to the intensive care unit and use of invasive mechanical ventilation as a severity parameter.

Conclusions: The analyzed studies allow us to conclude that obesity is a risk factor for severity and mortality in patients with COVID-19.
