Abstract

Introduction: The study of COVID-19 in risk or vulnerable groups is a priority need. SARS-CoV-2 infection is a condition that can increase unfavorable pregnancy outcomes. Identifying the infection early is associated with better prognosis.

Objective: To describe general aspects of COVID-19 in pregnancy.

Methods: A bibliographic review was carried out, from September 6 to 10, 2020, using the databases PubMed, PubMed Central, SciELO, Web of Science, Scopus, Ebsco and Clinical Key, as well as Google Scholar. The following terms were used as part of the search strategy: SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19, and COVID-19 en el embarazo [COVID-19 in pregnancy]. Twenty-seven scientific articles were cited, 96.30% of which belonged to this year.

Development: Changes in the cardiorespiratory and immune systems during pregnancy increase susceptibility to severe infection, as well as hypoxia. Among the conditions reported for COVID-19 cases during pregnancy are emergency cesarean section for fetal distress, premature rupture of membranes, premature delivery, intrauterine growth retardation, and fetal death. It is recommended that a multidisciplinary team be created for the management of the critical pregnant woman with SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Conclusions: There is a wide dispersion in scientific literature about the impact of COVID-19 on health. Pregnancy is a critical period not excluding infection, a reason why taking all the necessary measures in this risk group is paramount for both the mother and the offspring to reach a successful term.
