COVID-19: Clinical-epidemiological remarks and confrontation from Primary Healthcare

Abstract

Introduction: In the current circumstances, primary healthcare is a cornerstone of the health system and occupies a scene characterized by profound transformations.

Objective: To describe the role of primary healthcare in coping with the disease from the main clinical-epidemiological elements.

Methods: A bibliographic review was carried out in the databases SciELO, Scopus, Clinical Key and PubMed. A combination of terms was used as a search strategy, using the name of COVID-19 itself, as well as the terms atención primaria [primary healthcare] and prevención [prevention]. Twenty-five references were selected.

Development: Active screening, classification of cases, follow-up of contacts, treatment of vulnerable groups, and follow-up of discharged patients who were confirmed cases are important aspects for the confrontation of COVID-19 from primary healthcare, through several specific actions.

Conclusions: In Cuba, primary healthcare plays a paramount role in community care and in achieving greater efficiency of healthcare services. Therefore, prevention is the main aspect for the development of specific actions in the confrontation of COVID-19, such as active screening carried out by several social sectors, health professionals and students.
