Abstract

Introduction: Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease of multifactorial etiology, mainly affecting the colon and rectum. Its cardinal symptoms are chronic diarrhea, rectorrhagia and abdominal pain in severe cases. Its course is characterized by periods of remission and activity called outbreaks, although in a smaller proportion it may show continuous activity. When it affects the rectum, the left colon or other areas, it is called pancolitis. Colonoscopy with multiple biopsies is essential to confirm the diagnosis and assess the extent of the disease.

Objective: To highlight and promote the clinical symptoms that allows the diagnostic suspicion of ulcerative colitis at the first level of care.

Clinical case: The case is presented of 19-year-old patient with a history of chronic bloody diarrhea, refractory to several treatments, which disappeared on its own and subsequently recurred with greater severity, leading to the suspicion of an atypical etiology: ulcerative colitis.
