Abstract

Introduction: Psychological dependence (or non-substance addiction) to technology has become a problem that affects social and interpersonal relationships.

Objective: To describe the general characteristics of addictions to information and communication technologies and the risks that they represent to human health.

Methods: A literature search was carried out regarding basic aspects of addictions to information and communication technologies, from September to December 2019; publications in Spanish and English within the five years prior to that period were consulted. The descriptors adicción [addiction], TIC [ICT] and características generales [general characteristics] were used, together with the corresponding Boolean operators. A total of fifty scientific articles were consulted and sixteen were selected. The information was summarized using the Microsoft Office software package (2013 version).

Conclusions: Addiction to new technologies has become a mental health and a clinical problem in the twenty-first century. As in any addictive process, it is necessary to follow a treatment focused on changing habits and attitudes, as well as on controlling impulse. Therefore, a timely and adequate diagnosis is necessary for its treatment, as well as education on the use of technologies, especially in children and adolescents. In this respect, the family, as the basic cell and school of life, plays a paramount role.
