Abstract

Introduction: The prevalence of mental disorders, such as anxiety and depression, is notably high among medical students. Intensive schedules, frequent exams, and mandatory assignments are significant sources of stress.

Objectives: To identify the risk factors that contribute to stress and depression among medical students.

Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted at the Chiautzingo, Puebla university campus within the Comprehensive Medicine and Community Health program between October and December 2025. A sample of 41 medical students was selected through simple random sampling. Three instruments were administered: the Perceived Stress Scale, the Burnout Questionnaire, and the Beck Depression Inventory.

Results: 80.5 % of the students exhibited high stress levels, 17.1 % moderate levels, and 2.4 % low levels. Regarding anxiety, 39.02 % presented severe cases (n=16), 29.26 % showed signs of anxiety (n=12), and 31.7 % showed no signs.

Conclusions: The findings align with reports of high stress and anxiety rates among medical students. The identification of these factors serves as a wake-up call for the university as a whole.
