Introduction: Tuberculosis continues to be a major public health problem worldwide, despite being both preventable and curable.
Objective: To describe tuberculosis morbidity in Old Havana municipality from 2019 to 2023.
Methods: A descriptive, retrospective observational study was conducted involving 63 reported tuberculosis cases (both new cases and relapses) in Old Havana from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2023. Information was gathered from the Statistics Department of the Municipal Unit of Hygiene and Epidemiology and epidemiological records. Percentages and rates per 100,000 inhabitants were used for statistical analysis.
Results: Tuberculosis notifications increased during the study period, with the highest rate occurring in 2023 (23.7 per 100,000 inhabitants). The Aballí health area reported the most cases (27%). Males were the most affected group (71.4%), with 42.9% falling into the 45-59 age group. Pulmonary TB was the predominant form (93.7%) and bacteriological confirmation was achieved in 90.5% of cases. The most common risk groups included smokers (33.3%), former prisoners (31.7%), alcoholics (28.6%), and HIV-positive individuals (20.6%).
Conclusions: The desired control of tuberculosis has not been achieved in Old Havana. It is essential to design targeted intervention strategies for identified risk groups to better manage the disease and contribute to progress towards its elimination.
