Abstract

Introduction: Dengue represents a major health problem in the province of Mayabeque. Giving the population greater knowledge about the disease and ways to prevent it can reduce its impact.

Objective: To evaluate the level of knowledge about dengue and preventive measures in the population of Family Medical Office number three of Melena del Sur.

Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out during the month of April 2024. The universe was made up of 1,200 people belonging to the Family Medical Office and the sample was made up of 302 inhabitants. Information was collected using a structured survey. The instrument contained 13 single-selection questions. The variables analyzed were: level of knowledge about dengue, general knowledge and preventive measures. Statistical processing involved calculation of absolute and relative frequencies.

Results: Adequate preventive measures were observed in 298 inhabitants of the area, which represents 98.60%. 87.10% of the population considered dengue as a serious disease but only 192 (63.60%) identified its warning signs and symptoms. The main preventive measure was the use of the ventilator (54.60%). Furthermore, 38.40% of the inhabitants considered it important to eliminate mosquito breeding sites to prevent their spread.

Conclusions: The level of knowledge of the studied population about dengue was adequate and was related to effective prevention measures such as eliminating Aedes mosquito breeding sites and periodically cleaning homes.
