Abstract

Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally. 90% of them are derived from cardiovascular risk factors.

Objective: To characterize clinically and epidemiologically patients exposed to cardiovascular risk and their statistical association with the appearance of cardiovascular disease.

Methods: An observational, descriptive case series study was conducted in a sample consisting of 106 patients exposed to cardiovascular risk factors. An analytical case-control study was subsequently conducted to determine the statistical association between exposure to these risk factors and the appearance of cardiovascular disease.

Results: The average age was 58.48 ± 13.64 years. 54.72% were male. The hemochemical parameters showed altered mean values, with the exception of LDL-c, HDL-c and antithrombin III. Metabolic syndrome (54.72%) followed by non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (39.62 %) were the non-communicable diseases most related to cardiovascular risk. Black skin color (p = 0.039; V = 0.247) and heredity (p = 0.047; V = 0.193) and abdominal obesity (p = 0.000; V = 0.381) showed a statistical association with the appearance of cardiovascular disease.

Conclusions: It is concluded that the epidemiological and clinical distribution pattern of patients with or without cardiovascular disease does not differ from that reported in the specialized literature and a statistical association was demonstrated between black skin color, heredity and abdominal obesity, with the appearance of cardiovascular disease.
