Characterization of Male Infertility in Assisted Reproduction Consultation in Santa Cruz del Sur

Abstract

Introduction: Male infertility represents an impact on the couple; it is an existential crisis of the vital life cycle, taking into account that, more than a medical problem, it is a psychosocial health problem and a particularly serious scenario in the decline of the global fertility rate. Its comprehensive attention constitutes a public health priority.

Objective: To characterize male infertility in assisted reproduction consultation in the municipality of Santa Cruz del Sur.

Methods: A descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out, using a mixed approach, to know the characteristics of male infertility in Santa Cruz del Sur municipality, Camagüey, in the period from July 2019 to July 2023. The universe was constituted by 343 male patients and the sample was 80.

Results: The predominant age group was 31-40 years old (51.2 %). Concerning occupation, office workers, self-employed and laborers prevailed in equal percentage (60 %). The most frequent antecedent was varicocele (18.75 %). Their lifestyle was influenced by alcohol consumption, followed by smoking (47.5 % and 35 %, respectively). Patients with spermogram alterations predominated (81.25 %).

Conclusions: When characterizing the different factors that influence male infertility, coincidence appears regarding the fact that it is a complex and multifactorial problem. It is important to emphasize that this is not a definitive sentence and there are several options to increase the chances of conception. Office workers, self-employed and laborers were the most prevalent occupations. A history of varicocele, alcohol consumption and spermogram alterations were frequent findings in consultation.
