Abstract

Introduction: Transsexuality or gender dysphoria is the condition according to which a person is born with one sex, but feels and perceives themselves as the opposite sex, which they reach through pharmacological and surgical methods.

Objective: Update the concepts in relation to transsexuality that guarantee health professionals the instruments for accurate diagnoses and treatments necessary so that the issue is addressed with ethics and respect in all social sectors that are related to this population group.

Methods: A bibliographic review was carried out through the search engines Pubmed, Elsevier, Google academic, Research and Scielo. Of all the sources found and consulted, which were 350, 50 were used, taking into account as inclusion criteria complete, original articles, bibliographic reviews, meta-analysis, in English and Spanish, from 1964 to 2023. Conclusions: The responsibility of health professionals is to facilitate accurate diagnoses, therapies and procedures necessary so that the issue is addressed naturally, normally and with full respect in all social sectors that are related to this population group. Ignorance of this reality prevents progress in the social normalization of the transgender condition, which continues to be considered a mental illness.
