Knowledge About Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus by Direct Relative of the Patient with Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract

Introduction: The knowledge that the family has about type 2 diabetes mellitus can favor or hinder the patient's glycemic control, especially in adherence to diet and pharmacological treatment.

Objective: Identify the knowledge that relatives of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus have about the disease.

Methods: Observational, cross-sectional study. It included direct relatives (husband, children, parents) of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, general data were questioned, the level of knowledge was evaluated with Knowledge Questionnaire 24 (DKQ-24) validated for the population without diabetes, a descriptive analysis was carried out, it was compared with sex, age, education and relationship to the patient.

Results: It included 220 family members, 64% women, age 57±16 years, 39.5% had inadequate knowledge, a low level of knowledge in 36.8 % for glucose control and 30.9% for prevention of complications, 13.6% had a high level for basic knowledge.

Conclusions: The level of knowledge of relatives is inadequate in almost half of the relatives of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, being lower about glycemic control and prevention of complications.
