Abstract

Introduction: Disease cost calculation contributes to generating economic evidence that support resource allocation decisions, as well as to prioritizing treatments and immunization actions. The tool is unknown that allows performing the studies to determine it.

Objective: To design an algorithm as a tool for guiding the estimation of acute disease cost for the first healthcare level in Cuba.

Methods: A review was carried out of the literature and the documents guiding the work at the first healthcare level, as well as consultation with experts and direct observation.

Results: The use of the algorithm allows describing the care process at each moment of the patient's transit through the first healthcare level, the used resources and their subsequent monetary valuation, which facilitates disease cost calculation.

Conclusions: An algorithm was designed and validated to estimate the direct medical costs of acute diseases from the institutional perspective at the first healthcare level.
