Abstract

Introduction: Weather conditions influence people in specific and nonspecific ways; therefore, they are recognized as an important risk factor for human health. The health sector should be the protagonist in the recommendation, design and implementation of strategies and regulations aimed at mitigating and preventing the effects of climate change on human health. In Cuba, public health has opportunities for this confrontation; its fundamental strategy is based on the development of the first level of care, which constitutes a strength.

Objective: To gather information on the role of primary healthcare professionals in dealing with the negative effects of weather and climate variations on human health.

Methods: A search of relevant literature on the subject was conducted between December 2022 and February 2023. Scielo and Google Scholar were used as scientific information search engines; journal articles, books and documents of international and national scientific production were evaluated. This allowed for 30 bibliographies to be referenced.

Conclusions: The first level of care plays a fundamental role in this confrontation. The professionals at this level should be leaders and protagonist actors, helping raise the cared community’s awareness about such risk and, in turn, raise their competences to assume the new challenges of facing current and future dangers.
