Abstract

Introduction: Breast cancer is a health problem in the Cuban province of Holguin. It is the second cause of morbidity and mortality in female adults. The study of family aggregation allows to identify genetic predisposition.

Objectives: To describe familial aggregation in breast cancer patients from Holguin province.

Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive and observational study of case series type was carried out in the period from January 2012 to December 2022 with breast cancer patients from Holguin province. The study universe was made up of 876 patients belonging to 234 families. By means of simple random sampling, a sample of 19 unrelated families was selected, with 63 ill women. The clinical records were reviewed, the genealogical trees of each patient were made, and the studied descriptive variables were expressed in percentages.

Results: The age group 60-69 years was predominant (44.4 %). The patients belonging to families 1, 2 and 3 showed the highest number of ill persons, with 7 and 6 each, respectively. Mostly, the first and second degrees of consanguinity was expressed in 16 families (84.2 %).

Conclusions: Family aggregation for breast cancer was demonstrated in the studied families. The first and second degrees of consanguinity were the most affected, which confirmed the genetic predisposition of the members of these families.
