Anthropometric Indicators Related to Blood Pressure Alterations in Apparently Healthy Adolescents
Keywords:

Introduction: Epidemiological studies in children and adolescents reveal an increase in the prevalence of hypertension and prehypertension related to the increase in obesity and overweight figures. The use of anthropometric indicators can be an appropriate tool for early detection and control of obesity and its comorbidities.
Objective: To determine the relationship of some anthropometric indicators with blood pressure alterations in adolescents.
Methods: A descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted during the period from 2016 to 2020 in four family doctor and nurse offices in Havana, which included 857 adolescents between 10 and 18 years of age of both sexes. Anthropometric measurements were performed, including weight, height and waist circumference; also, systolic and diastolic blood pressure was taken. The anthropometric indicators body mass index, waist circumference and waist height index were associated with changes in blood pressure.
Results: Blood pressure alterations were observed in 14.8 % of the adolescents and 31.6 % were overweight/obese; systolic and diastolic blood pressure figures showed a strong association with waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio (p = 0.000).
Conclusions: The association between anthropometric indicators and blood pressure alterations demonstrate that physical measurements allow the identification of cardiovascular risk in apparently healthy adolescents.
