Fidel Castro Ruz in the Practice of Cuban Public Health, Emergence and Development of the Family Doctor and Nurse Program

Introduction: In 1959, when the Cuban Revolution came to power, there were three structured health systems in Cuba: state-run, private healthcare and mutualist. The revolutionary government, led by Fidel Castro Ruz, immediately took over the state-run health system, which began in the 1960s, with the integration of a single national system, starting with the creation of the Ministry of Public Health.
Objective: To highlight the personality of the revolutionary leader, who left his mark on the practice of Cuban public health in general and, particularly, with a very deep emphasis on the emergence and development of the Family Doctor and Nurse Program, whose model of care is a strength in the Cuban health system.
Methods: The historical-logical method was applied, using chronological analysis and synthesis; as well as documentary review and expert interviews as techniques.
Results: The actions carried out in the health sector in the approached stage are reviewed; also, the contribution and relevance of Fidel Castro Ruz's personality in the practice of Cuban public health is presented.
Conclusions: A brief historical account was made, presenting the contribution and relevance of Fidel Castro Ruz's personality in the practice of Cuban public health, particularly in the gestation, emergence and development of the Family Doctor and Nurse Program.
