Implementation of the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Managing Chronic Kidney Disease

Introduction: Chronic kidney disease is a health problem because of its impact on individuals, society and the economy.
Objective: To implement clinical practice guidelines for managing chronic kidney disease at the primary healthcare level.
Methods: A clinical epidemiological research was carried out between 2019 and 2021 at Policlínico Luis Augusto Turcios Lima, in the municipality of Pinar del Río. From a universe of 128 physicians specialized in family medicine, a sample of 95 was selected by means of intentional sampling. From a target universe of 117 patients with chronic kidney disease, a sample of 60 was selected through simple random sampling, according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The guidelines were developed by evidence-based medicine, consensus and expert opinion. Microsoft Excel 2016 was used for data collection and processing. For statistical analysis, McNemar's chi-square test at 95 % was used, together with mean, variance and standard deviation. Quality assessment was performed with the AGREE (Appraisal of Guidelines, Research and Evaluation for Europe) instrument.
Results: In the survey carried out before the intervention, physicians and patients had an inadequate level of knowledge and management of the disease. After the intervention, both physicians and patients changed their knowledge to adequate.
Conclusions: The guideline were implemented, which allows to improve the quality of life of patients with chronic kidney disease.
