Perception of Quality of Life by Older Adults from the Canton of Riobamba, Chimborazo, Ecuador

Abstract

Introduction: Population aging is a phenomenon that has been increasing in recent years. It includes a series of physiological changes and diseases that condition a significant decrease in the perception of quality of life among this population group.

Objective: To determine the perception of quality of life by older adults in rural parishes belonging to the canton of Riobamba, Chimborazo, Ecuador.

Methods: A basic, nonexperimental, descriptive and correlational research was carried out. The universe consisted of 857 older adults belonging to rural communities in the canton of Riobamba. The sample consisted of 696 older adults. The quality of life perception questionnaire used by the Ministry of Economic and Social Inclusion of Ecuador was used to determine the perception of quality of life by the older adults participating in the study.

Results: The average age was 67.87 years, with a predominance of the female sex (64.80 %), as well as the presence of chronic diseases (69.97 %). A predominance was obtained of older adults with satisfaction always or almost always in all the identified dimensions.

Conclusions: The perception of quality of life of older adults in the canton of Riobamba is adequate; it is necessary to analyze the elements that negatively influence the spheres of personal development, social inclusion and self-determination.
