Current Problems and Outlook for COVID-19 in Pediatrics

Abstract

Introduction: COVID-19 is a highly communicative disease among humans and affects all ages. Children mostly present asymptomatic and have favorable outcome. However, severe pneumonia, severe acute respiratory distress syndrome, and multiorgan failure can occur.

Objective: To provide scientific evidence on the behavior of COVID-19 in pediatric patients.

Methods: A review of COVID-19 was conducted in Medline (PubMed), Science Direct, and SciELO databases, using the Google Scholar search engine, using the keywords coronavirus, COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, and pediatrics in Spanish and English. In addition, the literature available in Infomed Virtual Health Library was used. The search period was from January 2020 to July 2021. Articles were selected by title, abstract, full text, and source type.

Conclusions: COVID-19 is a health problem with significant international impact. Its study should be conducted in a stratified manner, as its presentation, progression, and complications vary from individual to individual, generating changes in mortality for each specific group. Any palliative strategy against SARS-CoV-2 infection should aim to increase health education, modify risk factors for the development of the disease in each region, strengthen medical research that contributes to specific protection, and properly define health policies for prevention and control. Failure to do so means over drafting public spending and generating more preventable deaths.
