Current Status of Content on the Female Climacteric Period in the Training of Specialists in Comprehensive General Medicine

Introduction: The climacteric period brings with it significant changes in a women's life, which is expressed through their active participation in community life and in the responsibilities assumed at home and with their family. This contributes to the exacerbation of climacteric symptoms in intensity and frequency, and justifies the need for these women to receive comprehensive, differentiated, and highly qualified care; this is where Comprehensive General Medicine specialist plays a decisive role.
Objective: To determine the current status of the teaching-learning process of content related to the female climacteric period in the training of specialists in Comprehensive General Medicine.
Methods: A longitudinal, prospective, and explanatory study was conducted with 58 Cuban General Medicine residents and 22 specialists from Victoria de Girón School of Medical Sciences in Playa municipality in Havana during 2018-2019 academic year.
Results: 81% of the residents were unfamiliar with the model of care for menopausal women, 77.6% were unaware of the step-by-step treatment, and 72.4% considered the content they received related to the female menopause period to be insufficient.
Conclusions: The analysis of the results of the applied instruments and their methodological triangulation made it possible to characterize the problems and potentialities of the current state of the teaching-learning process of content related to the female menopause period.
