Abstract

Introduction: Torsion of the testis is caused by rotation of the testicular cord about its longitudinal axis.

Objective: To highlight the importance of timely diagnosis of testicular torsion.

Clinical case: A case is presented of an 18-year-old patient, brought by his parents to the emergency department for testicular pain, initially interpreted as orchiepidididymitis and treated medically.

Conclusions: Testicular torsion should always be considered as one of the main causes of acute scrotal pain. Delays in diagnosis should be avoided and referral to the next level of care should be made for timely treatment. Physical examination plays an important role in the diagnosis of testicular torsion; however, upon suspicion, immediate surgical treatment is recommended, since delay in care is directly related to the percentage of testicular salvage or loss.
