Abstract

Introduction: During the current pandemic related to coronavirus (COVID-19), prevention and control methods are used, including early diagnosis and isolation of patients suspected with or confirmed to present the disease, as well as contact tracing. However, the control of infectious diseases depends on factors related to the organization of health systems. During the process of detection of positive cases at el Policlínico Docente José Jacinto Milanés, of Matanzas, difficulties concerning the process quality arose that prevented efficient management in compliance with the protocol for dealing with COVID-19.

Objective: To apply the Lean methodology for the improvement of the organizational management of the COVID-19 processes.

Methods: A descriptive research with a qualitative approach was carried out at Policlínico Docente José Jacinto Milanés, of Matanzas, during the period January-February 2021.

Results: The causes of wasting were identified, measures were adopted that allowed better organization in the diagnosis of COVID-19, and the number of positive cases was reduced.

Conclusions: The application of the Lean methodology allows for greater organization in the flow of processes, eliminates the wasting events, including those of consumption not adding any value, and reduces waiting times.
